I really can not remember a time when dogs were not a big part of my life. Growing up, our first dogs were mixed breeds and wonderful family pets. I had always loved and admired the German Shepherd Dog. In 1985, I got my first German Shepherd Dog named Beaureguard and have been involved with this breed ever since. Through my dogs, I was introduced to the world of competitive dog sports.
I have titled dogs in Sport Detection, Obedience, Rally Obedience and Canine Good Neighbour. As much as I have enjoyed training in obedience and other venues, my true passion is training and working with dogs in scent detection and tracking. I have always been fascinated and amazed with what dogs can do with their noses.
In 2012, I was looking for something to do with my senior dogs and came across the sport of K9 Nosework©. While researching K9 Nosework©, I stumbled across a new Canadian Association based in Ontario known as the Sporting Detection Dogs Association. Through this association, I started exploring scent detection and my passion for the sport grew. It was amazing to see how much the dogs enjoyed using their natural abilities.
Starting off with a small group of people, I brought in our first presenter. I found other people interested in the sport and started hosting workshops and offering classes. As a teacher, along with Michelle we have watched this sport grow in Manitoba and it has been such a dream come true. In 2017, we had grown the sport enough to offer the first Manitoba sanctioned Trial under the Sporting Detection Dog Association.
Unfortunately, I no longer have one of my dogs who introduced me to the sport. I now have two young dogs, Vicky and Tymber who are training in scent detection and absolutely love it. To expand my knowledge and grow the sport in Manitoba, I feel continuing education is very important. I have taken numerous on-line courses, attended multiple seminars, webinars, review books and videos.
I am the Canadian Kennel Club Scent Detection Representative for Zone 8, Manitoba. I remain a CKC member in good standing and continue to work with various clubs ring stewarding at their trials.

This class runs for 6 weeks, in this time you will teach your dog how to indicate a behaviour to scent.
All dogs can find scent; it is your job to show them what we want them to find.
We will cover how to prepare scent, store scent, and line handling. All that is needed is a canine partner, a 6-10 foot leash and some yummy treats that are easy to chew and not crumbly.
Each student will receive a scent kit to take home for practice and enough pre-scented swabs of wintergreen to continue though the 6 weeks and slightly beyond.
For those who wish to continue beyond the intro class we have continuing classes. In these classes we delve into room searches, corners, inaccessible hides, converging odour, high/low hides, luggage and in weather permitting months, vehicle and exterior searches. We also introduce the two other odours of Pine and Thyme.
