How it all Came About

WELCOME

Manitoba Sport Detection (MSD) was formed by Diane Matuszewski in 2013. Sport Detection is a fun sport for you and your dog based on law enforcement detection dogs. Although law enforcement agencies use canines to detect narcotics and explosives, canine are also being used more recently by agencies to detect bed bugs and cancer. We use legal scents, essential oils, Wintergreen, Pine and Thyme.

This is an activity you can do with your canine partner either for fun or for competition. It offers a great way to exercise your dog through mental stimulation often leaving the dog tired from a good search.

In 2013, I was looking for an activity for my older dogs who needed something to do. I had heard about a new growing sport based on law enforcement detection dogs and thought this would be something fun for them. This is when I found the Sport Detection Dogs Association based in Ontario. Through watching DVD’s, enrolling in on-line courses, my dogs and I learned this sport.

The time came in 2014 to bring a workshop to Winnipeg to spread the news.

Since that time at least once a year we try to bring in an experienced presenter to enhance our skills and enable us to grow this sport here in Winnipeg.

  • 2014 saw our first workshop held in Winnipeg with Theresa Lewin.
  • in 2015, our second workshop was held with the presenter Karin Apfel, and another with Jean Blondin a former RCMP canine handler.
  • in 2016 we held our third workshop with the presenter Dana Gallagher.
  • 2017 saw our fourth workshop, held with the presenter Mary-Ann Warren.
  • in 2017 our first trial was held here in Winnipeg.
  • in January 2020 we held a David Bessason seminar in Winnipeg
